1 week to go!

As a lot of you probably know for the last year I have been planning a trip to Tanzania this summer to volunteer at Forever Angels Baby Home. Volunteering abroad has been something I have wanted to do for years and having always loved working with children and always wanted to go to Africa Forever Angels seems perfect!!
The past year has flown by and I am now leaving for Tanzania in 1 week! Over the last year I have done several fundraising events. The first one I did was a 5km run - I absolutely HATE running and did not enjoy it one bit but was worth it to raise money! My boyfriend Marcus did the run with me and had the patience of a saint as I did nothing but moan the entire way!

In February I held a Quiz Night with about 40 family and friends. We had lots of lovely prizes donated by local businesses for the raffle and overall it was a really good night!

In April I organised a Family Fun Day. The Swansea Tennis and Squash Club kindly let me use their venue for the day. We had a bouncy castle, face painting and hairspray, games and a treasure hunt, a raffle and stalls run by local businesses. Typically it was a horrible rainy day and the turnout wasn't as good as I had hoped but everyone who came enjoyed themselves and it was a success!

The final event was a 5km sponsored swim at the end of April. 3 of my lovely friends kindly volunteered to do this with me and although we all used to be competitive swimmers it had been a good few years since any of us had swum this distance! We all managed to finish it though!

I also sent out some items in the container which was sent out to Forever Angels in March. They can only afford to do this every 2 years so it was really important to send out lots of things. Forever Angels cares for up to 60 children at a time so this means lots of clothes, toys, nappies etc are needed! I sent out some toys, books and lots of clothes which were kindly given to me by the family I nannied for for the last year. I'm really looking forward to seeing them put to good use when I get out there now! The container reached Forever Angels a few weeks ago and they are now stocked up on enough nappies, clothes, toys etc to last the next 2 years!

All the items packed away in the Forever Angels attic ready to be used!

In April I also had the chance to meet Amy and Ben, who own and run Forever Angels, and their family when they were back in the UK. A get together was organised for people involved with Forever Angels. It was a really good day and I had the chance to meet some past volunteers who were able to give me some tips and advice.

I've had so many generous donations on my justgiving page from friends and family and also received £50 from the Swansea Rotary Club which was very kind of them and much appreciated.

So it's been a very exciting year and I am now in the middle of buying and sorting all the things to take out with me! The Swansea Lions Club very kindly donated £50 so I have been using this to buy items to take out for the children and have so far bought play dough, stamps stickers, cookie cutters, nappy sacks, sterilising tablets, baby nail clippers, lots of sweets and some bubbles!

I am going to try and update this blog as much as I can while I am out in Tanzania to let friends and family know what I've been up to!
